Price Comparison sites. Good or not so good? Wednesday, 5 August 2009 23:32

You are looking for a Hotel online.  You come across a website that is saying it will check 1000s of websites for the best price.   Great?  Maybe.  Maybe not.

When a Price Comparison site returns a web site and a booking is made, the Price comparison site will expect a cut from the commission.   To get a cut they would have in place an agreement with say Hotels, com that this will happen.

If they are not getting a cut of the commission then they will not show that website.

Many of the websites are owned by the same companies.  For example Expedia & Hotels.com are the same company & return the exact same price.  Same with Orbitz & E Bookers.

What they tend to do is once they buy a website is merge them into their main site.  They are buying the brand & not the technology.

Now 1000s become  100s or even less.

Price Comparison sites also will not return individual Hotels website unless they are part of a worldwide chain.

So good or not so good.  I would think up to a point but they are not all what they would like us to think they are.
