2009 has been a great year so far for Hotel Bookers in Ireland. Recent reports say the Average Room Rate Hotels get is down over 30% since 2007. Good news for the booker.
Everyone now agrees that there is over capicity in the Irish hotel industry. We need to be honest. Some Hotels that were built in certain areas hit trouble during the boom.
One thing for sure is hotels have proved flexible price wise during the downturn. I have not seen the price of a pint down 30% in my local pub.
So what is a fair price for a Hotel stay? I would love to hear your feedback. Please bear in mind the below.
Hotels pay 13.5% VAT on the price they sell to you.
One of the biggest expenses for hotels is cleaning bed linen/Towels.
Energy prices have gone up since 2007. Room prices have come down.
Staff need to be paid.
Hotels are like any business. They need to make a profit.
Let me know what you think. Just ask you try to be fair and resonable.

For a hotel with basic facilities, pub / restuarant, (think Travelodge in the UK), then 49.99 to 54.99 is a fair price.
In the US (yes yes I know, different country, different wages), you can get a comfort in motel room for less than $40 a night.
I think if hotels make the room prices attractive enough, then guests will not be put off drinking and dining their. However, if the room prices are high, guests will look elsewhere to eat.
Just my thoughts.
I think it depends on the standard and what your getting. Also, if you stay for 2 or more nights chances are your bed linen isnt washed until you leave so why pay for it? Also, why when you book a double room for 1 person the price DOUBLES in some cases if you add another person in. One expensive breakfast.
Overall for a bog standard hotel I wouldnt pay more than €120 per night per room incl breakfast. For the Boutique hotels it depends but during the boom we were ripped off by hotels
You can get a room in Ireland these days for less the €50 in some places. I agree with you on prices. Some Hotels do offer great room rates but let do not offer the same value in the Bar & Restaurant etc. In some Hotels there can be individual empires. Room sales not talking with food sales. If you pay €59 for a room and then feel overcharged in the bar you will not feel happy. If guests get good value in the Hotel overall they will come back. It will add to the Hotels bottom line profit.

You are correct. If you stay 2 nights then your bed linen is not washed until you leave. This is why I always advise hotels to offer lower prices for longer stays.
Single/Double price. Most Hotels offer room only prices. Same price for 1, 2 or 3 people in a room. A way around this can be to call the Hotel and ask for the commercial rate. Most hotels offer special prices for single rooms Sun/Thur.
Personally I will not pay more then €10 for breakfast.
Yes Hotels did jump on the Celtic Tiger bandwagon. So did many others.
